Stankovic’s order: No arrest for Medojevic

Stankovic’s order: No arrest for Medojevic

DF MP Nebojsa Medojevic and his colleagues are not sleeping in the Parliament building any longer. After eight days of unnecessary fuss about possible detaining the Movement for Changes (PzP) leader, the epilogue is known and seems to be expected. Supreme state prosecutor Ivica Stankovic has given in and signed an order that Medojevic may not be arrested. He did the same thing after DF MPs Andrija Mandic and Milan Knezevic’s immunity was lifted.

Eight days ago, the Parliament lifted Medojevic’s immunity in order to allow authorities to prosecute him over suspicion of money laundering.

In Stankovic binding instruction to the special prosecutor Milivoje Katnic, the SSP stated that the measure of remanding suspect in custody is issued only in exceptional cases, that it must always be justified when necessary for the smooth conduct of the proceedings, and that in Medojevic’s case it should not be proposed.

Thus, Stankovic acted in line with president Filip Vujanovic’s public suggestion. From the political and security point of view, he seems to have chosen a workable solution. However, it is not legally correct, because Medojevic’s colleagues from PzP are in custody for the same offences he is charged with – money laundering.

So far one thing is certain – with this move, Stankovic avoided the most risky option – arresting Medojevic in the Parliament and possible conflicts, as DF MPs reiterated that they would physically defend their colleague against arrest.
