Presidential elections scheduled for 15 April

Presidential elections scheduled for 15 April

Parliament Speaker Ivan Brajovic called presidential elections for 15 April, thus confirming CdM’s earlier report. These will be the seventh presidential elections since the introduction of a multiparty system in Montenegro.

“I believe that the elections will be held in a positive and democratic atmosphere and that we will show once again why Montenegro is the leader in the region. I invite all adult citizens to go to the polls and elect the best candidate,” Brajovic said.

Brajovic also informed President Filip Vujanovic about calling the elections. He will also officially inform the relevant international institutions.

The election campaigns start on the day of calling the elections and proposals for presidential candidates can be submitted to the State Election Commission by 26 March 2018.

It is not yet known who will run for the head of state, whether the opposition will have one or several presidential candidates, or, possibly, boycott the presidential elections.

The DPS has announced that it will announce its presidential candidate’s name in the next two weeks.

Potential candidates for the President of Montenegro will have to collect at least 7,932 support signatures.

The president of Montenegro is elected for five year term of office.

A candidate who has received more than half of the valid votes will be elected president of Montenegro. If no candidate receives that number of votes, a second round of elections will be held in 14 days.

As stipulated by the law, two candidates who receive the highest number of votes enter in the second round of voting. The candidate who wins a higher number of votes in the second round will be elected president of Montenegro.

Pursuant to the Law on the Election of the President, a political party or group of citizens may nominate a candidate, based on the signature of at least 1.5% of the total registered voters at the elections preceding the called presidential ones.

In the parliamentary elections in 2016, there were 511,405 registered voters in Montenegro.
