The future of the Western Balkans is in the EU
The future of the countries of the Western Balkans is in the European Union, Romanian foreign minister Teodor Melescanu said. He added that the enlargement policy would be high on the agenda during the country’s presidency of the Council of Europe.
He met the speaker of the Parliament of Montenegro Ivan Brajovic on Tuesday.
As Brajovic’s office stated, the officials agreed that excellent bilateral relations between Montenegro and Romania should be continuously upgraded, and that parliamentary cooperation could play a special role in this sense.
“Brajovic emphasised Montenegro’s commitment to EU membership and expressed the expectation that Romania’s full support and assistance to the enlargement process and European integration of Montenegro would be continued in the future,” the statement said.
Melescanu expressed full support for the individual progress of the candidates, ie the principle that the performance of each state is measured on the basis of its individual achievements and ability to fulfil the criteria for membership.
The officials also discussed current political developments in both countries and in the region.
