Adriatic-Ionian corridor – a priority for Montenegro

Adriatic-Ionian corridor – a priority for Montenegro

From the perspective of Montenegro, priority regional projects are Adriatic-Ionian corridors, ie a fast road and gas pipeline, as well as modernisation and expansion of railway infrastructure as a prerequisite for more economic integration and movement of people and goods and linking to European corridors, PM Dusko Markovic said at today’s WB6 business conference of the prime ministers of the six Western Balkans countries at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development’s Headquarters in London.

“The Berlin Process, as the one complementary to the EU accession process, launched the Connecting Agenda, or the initiation of joint regional projects in the field of infrastructure. Infrastructure integration is a prerequisite for strengthening economic integration, ie overall competitiveness of the region,” Markovic said during the panel.

Speaking of the region in the context of European integration, Markovic said that each country has its own dynamics when it comes to bringing the standard of living closer to the EU, so that the living standard in Montenegro, measured by GDP per capita, is at the level of 45% , whereas for the Western Balkans it is up to about 30% of the EU average.

Asked to present the key advantages of Montenegro as an investment destination, Markovic said that our country has development resources in the fields of tourism, energy, agriculture and processing industry, that it is a member of NATO and that it has far advanced into EU membership negotiations with legislation which is largely in line with the European and the legislation of developed economies.

The prime minister added that Montenegro is a tiny, open, Mediterranean economy, a member of the World Trade Organisation, with competitive tax rates, a 9% corporate income tax rate, and a 9%-11% income tax rate.

In addition, Markovic said, Montenegro offers numerous benefits and incentives to investors especially for investments in the northern region and underdeveloped areas.
