Markovic in Trieste: Montenegro fully committed to the EU

Montenegro is strongly committed to strengthening the rule of law and strengthening anti-corruption policies, prime minister Dusko Markovic said at the WB6 Plenary Session in Trieste, stating that the European Union (EU) will not be complete without the integration of the Western Balkans.

“We see today’s meeting in Trieste exactly as an event that will undoubtedly confirm that the Western Balkans belongs to the EU and that the EU will not be complete without integration of the entire region. That is precisely the strategic investment in peace, democracy, prosperity, security and stability of Europe as a whole,” said Markovic.

He said he strongly supported the message contained in the declaration prepared by the Italian presidency.

“The key foreign-policy priorities of the government today are focused on the integration of Montenegro into the EU. Be sure that all of our capacities have been directed to achieving this goal, and that the Government of Montenegro is fully committed to continuing the quality and efficient fulfilment of political and economic criteria for the membership,” Markovic said.

According to him, the majority of Montenegrin population see the country as a future EU member state.

In that sense, Markovic pointed to the importance of the Berlin Process, which was initiated three years ago by Germany. He also emphasised the European Commission’s work on the implementation of deals agreed at the Berlin, Vienna and Paris summits.

He thanked German Chancellor Angela Merkel and EU High Representative Federica Mogherini for their personal commitment to this joint project.

“In addition to these activities, we sincerely welcome the efforts and progress neighbours are making on the European path. I believe that this meeting is a strong confirmation that the strategic commitment of all Western Balkan countries – membership in the European Union – has no alternative,” Markovic said.

As Markovic said, there is an encouraging the fact that the Berlin Process has evolved from the initial agenda of integration in the areas of energy and transport to regional integration in many other important areas.

“So today, we have a joint work in the field of digital agenda, as well as improving regional cooperation in reaching the European standards in transport, and in that sense, today’s signing of the Transport Community Treaty is crucial,” Markovic said.

He added that Montenegro welcomed the initiative for joint cooperation between Italy and the Western Balkan countries in the fight against corruption.
